Surface defects vs structural defects: why treatment choice differs
If you’re unsure, use the Selection Guide to match option to failure mode.
Two defects can look similar from a passing vehicle, but require completely different solutions. The fastest way to waste money is treating a structural issue like a surface issue.
How to tell the difference
- Surface defects: localised wear, fretting, shallow deterioration.
- Structural defects: deeper failure, movement, pumping, recurring breakouts.
- Repeat history matters: recurring sites usually indicate root cause remains.
As a rule of thumb: repeat location + heavy loading + moisture = treat it as structural until proven otherwise.
